Vandals disabled a $200,000 weather buoy feeding information from the middle of the Hauraki Gulf to the AmericaOne syndicate. The buoy stopped broadcasting around midnight with the damage discovered early today. AmericaOne was the only team receiving information from the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere Research run buoy. According to police reports, someone had climbed the buoy and unscrewed a protective cover. Screwdrivers were left on the buoy itself and the solar panels had been damaged leaving little doubt that it was intentional damage. Police have started the difficult task of fingerprinting the buoy, and doubt that it was damaged by anyone from rival teams. Team New Zealand had accused Niwa of unpatriotic behavior last April for "working with the enemy," who paid $200,000 for the service.
