The California Environmental Protection Agency may add styrene to its high priority list for carcinogenic substances, a classification that could raise concerns about styrene?s health and safety risks. Styrene is a component of polyester resins and are commonly used in the construction of fiberglass boats. If labeled a carcinogen, further action to restrict worker exposure could follow. The California Cancer Identification Committee, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Marine Manufacturer supported Harvard Center for Risk Analysis are all involved with gathering data on the substance, with the studies expected to be complete in late 2000.
