OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — Julie Pampanek and crew Lindsay Duda from Chicago Yacht Club fended off some eager competitors on the final day to win the 2000 Junior Women's Double-Handed Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy. Going into the final day, they were tied with Emily East and Catie Yeager from Fairhope Yacht Club in Alabama, but the Chicagoans ended up surviving a late charge from Corinne Libby and Ginny Holt (Severn Sailing Association and Annapolis Yacht Club, respectively) to win the regatta.
The wind didn't let up at all and the rescue boats were kept busy for most of the event. At one point in the first race there were eight boats capsized. East and Yeager started the day with an OCS in the first race, but held on to claim second place overall. Though Libby and Holt won two of the last three races, they ended up third for the regatta. Pampanek and Duda posted a first and two seconds on the last day to claim their title. Molly Carapiet from San Francisco sailed an excellent regatta. She and her crew ended up seventh, and won the Sportsmanship award. For a complete report and scores, log on to www.ussailing.com.
