The Coast Guard recovered $256.1 million in cocaine found floating in the Pacific Ocean. A Coast Guard C-130 plane spotted 116 bales of cocaine floating 300 miles southwest of Acapulco which were then recovered by the Coast Guard Cutter Chase, although the source of the drugs was not found. The 7,276 pounds of cocaine will be unloaded in San Diego and taken to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further testing and investigation. The incident marks the Coast Guard?s fifth multi-ton interdiction in the eastern Pacific Ocean, with a combined total of 63,000 pounds of cocaine seized this fiscal year. In 1999, 110,000 pounds of cocaine were seized. The previous record was set in 1997 when 103,000 pounds were seized.
