The Coast Guard has released a video documenting its top ten rescues of the century. Its top rescue was an overloaded Haitian sailboat which pitched 100 passengers into the water during a capsize enroute to the United States. Overall the Coast Guard rescued 255,937 migrants from overcrowded, unseaworthy craft since 1980, many of which would have undoubtedly lost their lives were it not for the efforts.

The number two rescue was a fishing boat trapped in ice in the Bering Sea with huge waves washing over the vessel?s decks. Further rescues profiled overseas missions during World War II and in the mid-Pacific.

The Coast Guard dedicated this video and its Top 10 list to the seven Coast Guardsmen the service lost in the line of duty just since 1995: three from a capsized motor lifeboat off the Washington coast in 1997 and four from a downed helicopter off Northern California in 1997. Over more than 210 years of service the Coast Guard has rescued more than 350,000 people with modern day Coast Guard records detailing the rescue of people since 1968.
