The U.S. Coast Guard estimates that Jim Givens Survival Company and the Givens Ocean Survival Company may have improperly serviced as many as 200 liferafts. The Coast Guard is urging mariners who have received service from either of the companies to check their liferaft service records and have the equipment re-serviced as soon as possible. All of 19 liferafts inspected had deficiencies that ranged from missing equipment, expired items, and problems with the carbon dioxide cylinders which inflate the rafts. Many other items such as lighting, pumps, and such basics as bailers or oars were also missing or in need of replacement.
