Construction of Cam Lewis? Team Adventure is underway in Cherbourg, France. The 108-ft catamaran will be identical to two other boats designed by the Gilles Ollier Design team for The Race, the non-stop, no limits, round the world race. One was built for New Zealander Grant Dalton and Club Med, with the other constructed for Code 1 and a confidential skipper. The catamaran will be 25.5 feet wide and have a mast 150 feet high. The Carbon/Nomex honeycomb sandwich construction will displace an estimated 44,000 pounds. The target circumnavigation is expected to be 60 days with an average run of 450 miles at 18.75 knots. Under ideal conditions the boat should be capable of bursts over 40 knots (46 mph), or typically about twice the wind speed. The first layers of carbon fiber in the first half-mold were laid with an official launch date scheduled in September, 2000.

Lewis? former exploits included crossing the Atlantic on the French based Primagaz, and Banque Populaire. He has logged over 50,000 miles on high tech sailing machines, crewed on the 1988 winning yacht in the America?s Cup Stars and Stripes, and holds the westbound Trans-Atlantic record as well as numerous other sailing titles in several classes.

The boat is being used to highlight the educational program, Team Adventure USA, which will emphasize the connectedness and fragility of the planet through a ?virtual adventure? format.
