NEWPORT, RI The New York brokerage firm of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) won Shake-A-Leg Newport's eighth annual Wall Street and Corporate Challenge Cup over the past weekend. The regatta, which has become a Newport tradition for business executives willing to trade their suits for sailing attire, was contested in vintage 12-Meters on Narragansett Bay. With eight races completed, DLJ posted 272 points to win, topping runner-up E-Bond Trade of Walnut Creek, CA, with 259.
The seven participating syndicates each raised $30,000 to benefit Shake-A-Leg Newporta not-for-profit organization dedicated to innovative rehabilitation programs for people with spinal-cord injuries. "It was good, friendly competition, and we had perfect weather," said Race Director Robbie Pierce. Pierce also heads up Shake-A-Leg's renowned adaptive sailing program, which serves hundreds of children and adults every summer at the Sail Newport Sailing Center. "That's what sailing is supposed to be."
Along with sailors from Shake-A-Leg's adaptive program, special guest sailors assisted the corporate teams. They included Stars & Stripes runner trimmer Chuck Brown and boat manager Mick Harvey. Legendary yacht designer Olin Stephens, known for developing many 12-Meters that went on to defend the America's Cup, sailed aboard his own creation, Columbia, during the event. Northern Light, another Stephens design, also was used for the competition.
A half-hour broadcast of the Wall Street and Corporate Challenge Cup will be televised later this week on Boating Today, a weekly show that reaches 13 million viewers. Various stations will carry the broadcast, including WLNE Channel 6 in Providence, RI (July 16 at 8:30 a.m.); New England Sports Network (July 14 and July 16-check local listings); Home Team Sports Network (July 15 at 9:30 a.m.); and Florida's Sunshine Network (July 19 at 8:30 a.m.).
