Steve Fossett and his team of two copilots are on target to break the 12-year record for flying around the world in a medium weight airplane. Fossett, who is taking a break from preparing the 105-foot maxi-cat PlayStation (currently in Bermuda) left Nagasaki, Japan bound for Midway Island. The team is expected to touch down shortly after midnight local time Wednesday, before carrying on to Los Angeles where a finish time could come as early as 8:17 a.m. local time. One of the factors taken into account for the flight plan was the 800 albatross chicks, which had recently hatched near the airport at Midway Island. As the adults regularly cross the runway during the day to bring food to their young, all aircraft movement is restricted to night.
