In Southwest Harbor, Maine, yacht manufacturer The Hinckley Company used approximately 8,000 cubic yards of gravel to fill almost three acres of freshwater wetlands between 1985 and 1996 to increase its boat storage facility. The company, which manufactures yachts ranging in size from 35.6-ft to 70-ft, is now asking for permits for the project, as well as a mitigation package from the US Army Corps of Engineers which will decide whether the fill can stay.

Hinckley has proposed to support two additional areas totaling 27-acres for preservation on Mt. Desert Island near the Marshall Brook and Arcadia National Park areas. The land would be deeded to the park and no fees to the public would be involved. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is prepared to allow the company to maintain the filled area.
