Frenchman Philippe Monnet continues to experience calm winds off the Antarctic continent in his attempt to best the solo ?wrong way? around the world record in his Open 60 UUNET. Through Wednesday night he spotted four icebergs with radar, but more worrisome are the number of growlers, isolated blocks of ice that can?t be located with radar, which Monnet has been spotting in the area. Last reports had the boat making eight knots in 12-knot southwesterly winds sailing a more northerly course to take advantage of forecasted winds. Monnet now has a 943-mile lead over current record holder Mike Golding?s pace since leaving Ushant, France on January 9th. .A storm is forecasted for tonight.
