New Zealand authorities are on the lookout for intoxicated boaters in the spectator fleet watching the America?s Cup. A report released by University of Auckland?s Injury Prevention Research Center indicated one out of 25 boaters surveyed at boat ramps last March and April were over the legal alcohol limit for driving a car. The survey polled more than 600 people, and if the findings hold true for the America?s Cup, researchers expect as many as 120 boaters out of an anticipated 3,000 boats will be over the legal limit for safe operation. In New Zealand, one out of four boating fatalities are alcohol related. The effect of alcohol increases the chance of a passenger falling off a boat and inhibits their ability to swim once in the water.
