An Australian lifeguard who accidentally drank water from a jar containing tentacles from the deadly box jellyfish was hospitalized with labored breathing. The lifeguard swallowed at least one mouthful of water in which the jellyfish tentacles were being kept as part of a research project for a U.S. based marine biologist. Stings from the box jellyfish are usually fatal The tentacles are almost transparent, although the jar was labeled. The specimen was kept in the refrigerator for a length of time that caused many of the stinging cells to drop off the tentacles, a factor that may have saved his life.
