Maxtec Wizard finished the MTN Cape to Rio race after 16 days, 15 hours, and 48 minutes in a crossing that took more than 24 hours off their 1996 finish time. After finishing skipper Jan Reuvers had plenty of hindsight as to what could have been done for a better than sixth place finish. The vessel lost time during the first few days and would have fared better going west instead of north. Losing a spinnaker rounding Isla de Trinadade had eight crewmembers stitching a 2.5 meter tear in the kevlar main sail by hand. Aboard were Swedes Magnus Ohlsson and Klas Nylof, seasoned Whitbread racers who viewed the crossing as practice for one leg of that race?s grueling itinerary. Disappointed that the downwind sailing that the race is known for did not materialize, the team was pleased with their performance nonetheless. Further back BP Umoya Omusha moved into fourth position, inside of 450 miles to Rio de Janerio.
