NEW ORLEANS, LA Sailing in her home waters seemed to suit young Corrie Clement just right as she posted convincing scores (including seven bullets) to win US SAILING's 2000 Women's Open last weekend at the Southern Yacht Club. Competing in Laser Radials against 10 other participants representing the various regions of the country, Clement won the single-handed championship for the Mertz Trophy by a 13-point margin. Second place went to Robin Rey of St. Petersburg, FL.
In the double-handed championship for the Adams Memorial Trophy, Sally Barkow and Deborah Capozzi of Norfolk, VA, blazed their way around the racecourse to best a five-boat fleet of 420s by posting scores that included six first places, one second, two thirds, and a fourth. Their nearest competitors, Molly Carapiet and Louise Sherman of Belvedere, CA, finished seven points behind.
