The Polish catamaran Polpharma-Warta rounded the southern most tip of Gran Canaria charging along under full main and genoa. The team has covered 710 miles since the February 13th start and so far, the 85-foot catamaran is well inside the time to qualify for The Race. Last reports had the team 16 minutes ahead of the pace set by Jet Services V, the current record holder of the 1988 east -west record. The catamaran posted a 328-mile run averaging 13.6 knots over the first 24 hours, as compared to the 8.6-knot average of Jet Services V. However, as winds filled from the stern, Polpharma-Wartawas forced to sail a zigzag course to keep the record-setting pace, posting a 302-mile run. The team has 3,178 miles to cover in the 3,885 mile passage from Cadiz, Spain to San Salvador, Bahamas.
