HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA An endangered right whale tangled in a bundle of fishing line and buoys was spotted in the Bay of Fundy, struggling with the gear, Canadian Press reported. A commercial whale-watching boat identified the North Atlantic right whale, which was last seen Sunday by a US research vessel. The equipment appeared to be coming out of the whale's right side. "It didn't look like it was in distress," said Deborah Tobin, whale emergency network co-ordinator with East Coast Ecosystems Research Organization in Digby, Nova Scotia, although she added that sometimes lines become tightly wound. Earlier this week researchers were hoping to free the rare whale, but bad weather kept them onshore. Yesterday conditions were still too rough for them to try and find the whale. An aerial survey will be done if the high winds ease. North Atlantic right whale populations have dropped to 300 and continue to decrease each year, heightening worries that this species may become extinct.
