PACIFIC OCEAN — The second hurricane of the season, Hurricane Carlotta, is gaining force as it heads farther out to sea, pounding the Pacific coast of Mexico with heavy rains. The National Weather Service in Miami upgraded Carlotta from a tropical storm late Monday after it developed maximum-sustained winds of 74 mph—the minimum winds required for hurricane status. Mexican television reported more than 1,000 people were forced to evacuate, and six people were killed on roads damaged by mudslides. Late Tuesday, Carlotta was located in the Pacific Ocean about 195 miles southwest of Zihuatanejo. It was projected to continue on a track out to sea, with no threat to land, according to Mexico's National Meteorological Service. Zihuatanejo is a beach resort about 150 miles north of Acapulco.
