A 250-foot ship off the west coast of Scotland Thursday was reported listing after losing part of its cargo in gale-force wind. The Fina Timber lost part of its load of timber overboard and began listing to port. The crew reported the loss of about 15 packages of timber, each between 16 to 20 feet long. A coast guard tug was sent to the scene and a Royal Navy rescue helicopter and lifeboat also assisted. While the ship and its Swedish crew of 10 were not considered to be in immediate danger, the situation could worsen if more cargo is lost. The most recent reports had the crew waiting for the weather to improve so they could secure the remaining cargo with wire straps. Force 8 weather in the region was expected to worsen to Force 9, heightening concerns that the situation might deteriorate.
