JERSEY CITY, NJ Three environmental organizations have joined together to host the Ships to Save the Waters Conference, scheduled to take place Liberty State Park in Jersey City, July 1-2. The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, the Schooner Ernestina Commission, and the Delaware Bay Schooner Project have collectively organized a weekend of music and international initiatives to protect the world's oceans.
Drawing upon 35 participating environmental groups for ideas, case studies, and speakers, the conference will examine the state of the oceans, as well as coastal and river waters. Speakers will share strategies for recruiting volunteers, conducting distance-learning programs, gaining funding, using ships to save the waters, blending activism and education, and engaging the media in the defense of the environment.
Madame Francine Cousteau, wife of the late Jacques-Yves Cousteau, will deliver a keynote address on the work of the Cousteau Society and other international initiatives intended to protect the world's oceans. She plays a leading role in such conservation measures as the Society's Waters of Peace, an international initiative to identify and clean up wastes from the world's oceans, and Future Harvest, the public outreach arm of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.
The sloops Clearwater, Adam Hyler, Rainbow Race, Sojourner Truth, Woody Guthrie, and the schooners Ernestina and A.J. Meerwald will be alongside the park's docks and will be open to the public. For more information see http://www.ernestina.org
