The US Sailing Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal was presented to Randy Jones of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Pat Papandrea, of Schaumburg, Illinois and Clay Rivers of Franklin, Tennessee. The trio, ranging in ages from 37-45, had just graduated from a Basic Keel Boat course and were out on their solo sail when they sighted two people clinging to a buoy. The jib was furled, the mainsail came down and the engine was started. The exhausted victims, one suffering the first symptoms of hypothermia, had been thrown from a personal watercraft and were taken aboard. The boat continued to motor to the harbor where the victims were transferred to the harbormaster?s boat. After three days sailing together the three developed the teamwork and confidence to make the rescue. The US Sailing Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal is given to skippers of pleasure boats or race support vessels who effect rescues of victims from the water. The award is made for rescues in U.S. waters, or in races that originate or terminate in a U.S. port. The Rescue Medal has been in existence for twelve years and is administered by US Sailing?s Safety-at-Sea Committee.
