Phillipe Monnet in his Open 60 UUNET has covered 210 miles in the last 24 hours in his attempt to set a new record non-stop, round the world against the prevailing winds. Threading around stagnant air, Monnet was able to see speeds of 11 knots thanks to strategy from his shoreside weather router Pierre Lasnier. The plan had the boat slowing down to look for favorable entry into the doldrum-laden region. Monnet was able to find northeast winds, and by following the sun during the day on an east to west course and heading south at night, he has been able to keep the boat moving. Another obstacle exists 100 miles on the southern side of the equator, although the worst of the doldrums are considered behind. Monnet should cross into the southern hemisphere on his 17th day at sea, 6 days ahead of existing record holder Mike Golding. With little sleep in the last two nights, Monnet is hoping to benefit from stronger trade winds. Last reports had UUNET close reaching at 9 knots.
